Happy Halloween

Is it just me or are vampires and horror rapidly gaining 'new black', status? It seems that everywhere you turn there is a new book, movie or tv show on the (increasingly sexier) sun-shy ghouls. Never one to shy away from a trend, we've jumped on the blood-sucking bandwagon, and quite frankly we can't get enough. Forget grinning pumpkins, black cats and witches hats, Planet Cake is making Halloween funky! Adam showed Sydney how we do things with his appearance (hello...front cover!) in the Inner West Courier.

Seeing as it is the week for giving sweet treats to youngsters, we were thrilled to host eight students from the Wyong Christian Community School, currently studying year 12 food technology. The guys came in for an insider look at the industry and were treated to a one-off design lesson from Antony.

Our classroom is literally bursting with excitement today, with twenty students taking part in our third Beginner Bites, hosted by Paris herself. This workshop is one of the best introductions to Planet Cake decorating, and gives you the chance to sample all that we have to offer. Missed out? Never fear, Paris will be appearing as part of Kinokuniya's Bake Fair tomrrow from 12pm. Drop by to have your copy of Planet Cake Cupcakes signed by Paris and to try your hand at cupcake decorating (and of course, eating!)

In complete contrast to our kooky Halloween cakes this week were these four gorgeously-girlie ones. While the pony-themed Madhatter is just stunning, I must admit being the Lewis Carroll fan that I am, it was the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party cake that I fell completely in love with this week.

Not being completely familiar with the Halloween etiquette (can one say 'happy' Halloween?) I am just going to wish everyone a fabulously, funky Halloween, one that is hopefully full of delicious things and a good-looking vampire or two!

Alice in Wonderland Madhatter

Okay, as promised here are the finished products from Anna Maria's Alice in Wonderland Madhatter class, which we ran for the first time ever last week. Just amazing!

Our week in cake

At long last, Anna Maria's Madhatter Course has arrived! I have so enjoyed watching these amazing cakes come to life and I can't wait to show you the finished results on Monday. Well done ladies!

And so my curiosity is satisfied...no shades at night! Shaggy celebrates his Sydney event last week with our fab cake.

Now when is Margie going to just stop making these terrible cakes?

Teacher Profile: Stuart Girling

Originally hailing from the UK, Stuart started his career as a chef before his love of cake decorating led him through the doors of Planet Cake, as a student in 2009. With an ever-keen eye out for talent, Paris recognised a flair for design and decorating and before he knew what hit him, we had snaffled him up for our own!
No matter what kind of a madhouse it is in here Stuart remains cool, calm and collected, and one of the most patient and kindest teachers we have. Oh and did I mention that his cakes rock?
With brand new Basics and Novelty workshops coming out this year and early 2011, I thought it was about time we introduced you to one of our star teachers, because you're about to see a whole lot more of him!

Monday, October 18, 2010

It's so rare that we actually get to see what happens to our cakes once they leave our doors, so this week I wanted to share with you this beautiful Madhatter (a team collaboration from Ritzy and Adam) created for our admin queen, Cat's, sister-in-law. This uplight, in sunset hughes (at the MCA, Circular Quay) highlighted exactly what it should and perfectly offset the fuschia in the cake.

The week in brief

This week we said goodbye to one of our Melbourne facilitator's, the lovely Yvette Hooley. Yvette remains a firm Planet Cake friend and we wish her all the very best in all her cakey-endevours!

Still in recovery mode from the Miz's thank you card, we were pretty excited this week to then be asked to make this cake for legendary singer, Shaggy. I can't wait to see the photo's from the event, as I can't help but wonder if he wears those famous shades at night?!

This was fairly unanimously the cake of the week, simple, elegant with just a touch of quirky - like us!

Planet Cake in Melbourne

Last week Adam and Betty took on Melbourne with amazing results. Can you believe only a year ago, Adam was enrolled in the Basics Foundation class here in Sydney?
